Why We Make Multiple Short Films

Father's Blade
For our Animation and VFX students at Escape Studios, creating multiple short films in a limited timeframe is a powerful way to develop skills, discover unique visual styles, and build a portfolio of polished work.

While a longer year-long project might seem like an ideal opportunity to polish one film to perfection, here is why producing several short films can be a much more valuable learning experience:

What's The Point of Winning Festival Awards?

Here at Escape Studios our student film-makers have won hundreds of festival awards - more than 500 over the past decade.  But what's the point of it all?  Do awards make a difference?

At Escape Studios we train Studio-Ready Talent, teaching artists to work in teams and produce professional-quality work, simulating as closely as possible the realities of a studio environment.

Festival awards are a recognition that the work produced by our students is of professional quality.  Awards also help to burnish our students' IMDB profiles - an important first step in winning recognition in our industry.

New Coventry Marking Process at Escape Studios

Our Degrees are Validated by The University of Coventry
Since September 2024 our undergraduate degrees at Escape Studios have been validated by the University of Coventry, rather than by the University of Kent.

With this change of oversight comes changes to the way we mark undergraduate work; the main change being to simplify our marking systems.

Where's my Classroom at Escape Studios?

Classroom Guide at Escape Studios
Where's my classroom? As Escape Studios expands, it gets harder to know where all our classrooms are located.

To see where you are studying, see the map on the left, which shows which floor each classroom is on - and never get lost again.

We moved into our new North Greenwich Campus in the summer of 2023, located in located in the North Greenwich Peninsula, right next to The O2, in the Design District.

Later, in the summer of 2024 we expanded into the Sixth Floor at 6 Mitre Passage, to house our growing student community.

Welcome to Our New Students!

We're extending a warm welcome to our new undergraduate students at Escape Studios. Undergraduate teaching starts on today - Monday 23rd September.  You can see the full 2024-25 term dates here.

Classes take place at our Greenwich Campus at 6 Mitre Passage SE10.

Core Textbook - The Animator's Survival Kit
We recommend that all our animation students buy a copy of  The Animator's Survival Kit, by Richard Williams; now the standard textbook for animators and easily the most comprehensive book available for learning animation.

We have many copies in the Animation Library here at Escape Studios (we also have many other books on animation and digital film-making), but they are often out on loan so it's a good idea to get your own copy.

Why Escape Studios is Like a Gym

Monty in the Gym by Sam Baker
Escape Studios' Head of Creative Technology Michael Davies likes to say that studying at Escape Studios is like joining a gym.

Joining a gym won't make you fit, but regular use of the equipment will.  The same principle applies at Escape Studios, where we offer a system of blended learning, a mixture of classroom teaching and also self study using our video tutorials, available exclusively for our students. We call this "The Escape Method".
